From the course: Wireless Networking: Advanced Troubleshooting

Get hands on

- [Instructor] We've come to the end of another module, so let's get some hands-on experience and use the knowledge learned in this module. Let's give it a try. With Wi-Fi running, try out the netsh trace command as you saw in the video demonstration. After you run nets sh trace, you're going to get some files, and it'll tell you where those files are located as you saw in the video. And you can open up those files in your favorite web browser. Scan through the page and make sure you check out the very bottom that shows the history of your connections and disconnections, and the reason for those disconnections at the bottom of the report. Then, pause the video and let's take a look at the results. So, were you able to see the historical data using netsh trace? Of course, if you haven't used your particular laptop, for instance, using Wi-Fi in the past three days, you're not going to get a lot of information. So, you may want to use a computer that has been using Wi-Fi recently to get the most amount of data. And what did you learn about your Wi-Fi device and network while using the utility? Did it show you any disconnects and some disconnect reasons as to why you lost that connectivity, and did it give you any insights into those reasons? Based on what you learned in this module, can you use some of that knowledge to be able to fix some of those disconnect issues? netsh trace is a great wireless utility to give you quick information about Wi-Fi, and it's another feature to add to your IT skillset.
