Understanding VMware certifications

- In this video, we'll learn about a few of the different VMware certifications that are available. And specifically, we are going to focus on certifications related to vSphere. And here you can see we're at the landing screen for the VMware Certification website. And you can see a link for this site shown here on your screen. So let's scroll down a little bit and take a look at the Data Center Virtualization Certifications. And the first one that I want to mention is the VCTA, the VMware Certified Technical Associate for Data Center Virtualization. This is the entry level certification for people who are new to VMware. This is your foundational knowledge of vSphere, and basic concepts of virtualization and basic tasks within vSphere. So if you're looking to get started with VMware certification, this is the first certification that you should get. And you can find details about what is in the exam here. So here we can see the exam guide. That's going to give you the most information. But you can see here, the exam is 135 minutes long and it is 51 questions and it is $250. And if we click view exam guide, we'll get a nice PDF file that'll tell you exactly what to expect on the exam. You can see all of the exam objectives here. And the courses that I've created do align with the objectives of these exam guides. So the VCTA, that's your first certification you should be looking into. And then once you complete that, you can move on to the VCP. And a few things have changed with the VMware Certified Professional for Data Center virtualization. There used to be a requirement that you would have to take an official VMware training in order to get the VCP, that is no longer required. So you can just take the exam. You don't have to attend one of their training courses anymore. For years, you had to do that. And so, you can see details about the exam here. It is 135 minutes, 70 questions, $250. And, again, there is an exam guide here that you can download. So those are really the most common two certifications, the VCTA and the VCP for data center virtualization. But as you can see, there are a bunch of other VCP options available here, some of which are kind of new. And I just want to take a moment to talk about a couple of these. There is the VCP for VMware Cloud Foundation. And, yeah, this is a newer one. And if we take a look at the exam guide, you're going to see there's a lot of information about hybrid cloud platforms here. You're going to be using multiple tools. So it's not just vSphere. You're going to have to understand vSAN and NSX and SDDC Manager components as well. So this is more of a hybrid, cloud focused type of certification. And another newer VCP is the VMware Certified Professional for VMware vSphere Foundation Administrator. And here you can see the exam guide for this certification. And you can see the objectives here. They're focused on vSphere with Tanzu, they're focused on ESXi. And you can see here, the certification covers the basics of vSphere, setting up ESXi hosts, creating virtual machines, things like that. Now, one final thing I want to mention, you can see the current certification right now is the DCV 2024 certification. And, by the way, right now it's November 29th of 2024, so it's almost 2025. These certifications never expire, but they come with the year noted on them, right? So if I get a VCP in 2024, it's the VCP for 2024. Now, I might take the VCP exam in 2025 and it might actually be the exact same test. So once you earn a VCP certification, it is valid indefinitely, it never expires. But VMware is going to continue to release new versions of their certifications every year. And so, if you want to prove that your knowledge is up to date, you can continue to pursue the latest VCP certifications as they become available.
