From the course: Using Generative AI Ethically at Work

Being kind

- Road rage is the phenomenon that happens when a person behind the wheel of a car lashes out with rude, aggressive, or hostile behavior. We've likely all seen examples of road rage or perhaps experienced it ourselves, even if we don't want to openly admit it. But have you ever wondered in the time before cars, did people riding horses have road rage? The technological affordances of the car, the speed and power it enables, the way it encapsulates people in their own one and a half tons steel bubble and all the infrastructure it requires fundamentally changed things. A car is not merely a faster horse, and generative AI is not just a faster way to accomplish your work. It will have impacts on society that are not always obvious to predict in advance. Throughout the course, we've covered how generative AI requires us to think about a myriad of ethical issues from how it's made and who makes it to how we use it in our work. As the technology matures, I'm hopeful that we'll see better, more ethical options, the fair trade coffee version of generative AI. I encourage you to keep asking for better choices. Generative AI is going to impact our workplace relationships. You could think of this as the generative AI-induced equivalent of road rage. The frustrations or dilemmas you might feel about either your own use of the technology or about how someone else's use of the technology impacts you. We got a glimpse of that from our fictitious friends at every company. I hope this course has equipped you with some tools to make ethical choices in using generative AI at work. I'd love to stay connected with you, so please reach out on LinkedIn or check out my website at ethicallyalignedai.com. Finally, something that's become a bit of my personal signature is to end my work with this symbol. It's from the Bushido code, the ethical code of honor that outlines the virtues of Samurai warriors and it means compassion. Having a heart for others, being empathetic, is a core part of being able to use generative AI ethically. It's a reminder of how our actions affect others. It's an antidote to road rage. Compassion is what underpins my work, and I hope it inspires your work too.
