Using contests to maximize engagement

- Effective contests don't just capture the initial interest of the learner. They sustain interest over time. As alluded to when we talked about creating contests in the last video, one of the best ways to maximize engagement with a contest is to create teams. When a person is on a team, they don't want to let down their team members. They feel part of something bigger and tend to stay more motivated and focused. Strive to create teams who compete against each other in your contest rather than having individuals compete against one another. If possible, conduct a mini version of the contest to see what flaws, cheats, or workarounds might be created by the people involved. Then work to eliminate whatever doesn't work. Test your assumptions, rules, and instructions on a small test audience before rolling it out to a large group. A little pre-work saves a lot of headaches down the road.
