- We all like to be recognized for our hard work and achievements. When we're young, we compete for medals and trophies and sports, and then as we get older, we still compete for things like sales awards, employee of the month, and other forms of recognition. Even famous movie stars covet recognition and compete yearly for an Oscar, a physical form of recognition. In the realm of gamification, badges are that element of recognition. Badges are earned or awarded. When a person achieves a specific milestone or demonstrates mastery of a particular skill or skills. Badges signify accomplishment and proficiency, providing visible proof that an achievement has been accomplished. They serve to supplement and not replace typical manager feedback and recognition. Because of the human need for recognition among our peers, the earning of badges can be a key component for incentivizing desired behaviors.
