The difference between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards

- Effective gamification motivates learners by leveraging two different types of motivation which are often thought to be opposites. Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. But they're not opposites. Both can and do exist at the same time. And if you want your gamification efforts to most effectively motivate your learners you want to make sure both are included in your design of gamification. Okay, at this point you might be saying "Wait a minute, "what is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation?" Intrinsic motivation is when someone is motivated by internal factors such as wanting to partake in an activity because it's fun, or providing an opportunity to learn. Or for the feeling of accomplishment the activity invokes. Intrinsic motivation in gamification would come from a learner mastering new content, feeling a sense of accomplishment, and having a sense of control over their own actions.
