How do you define contests in the context of gamification?

- Contests can also amplify the engagement and motivation of learners. While not appropriate for every situation, they can help participants to set specific goals and work toward achieving those goals. Contests can be at the individual or group level. Typically, I find contests to be most effective at the group level. When you create teams and then put a winning condition on a question and answer exercise, such as whichever team answers more questions correctly wins, you suddenly have an engaged and enthusiastic group of learners. Let me give you an example from my own teaching experience. I often use an audience response system to ask learners questions and elicit responses. It helps to raise the energy of the participants and makes it more engaging. I've done just the question and answer presentation format a number of times.
