Best practices for implementing a point system
- Points, when awarded thoughtfully, serve as more than just a tally. They influence learner activities, answers, and overall behavior. But to achieve those results, you need to carefully craft the point system. We've already talked about the importance of transparency and alignment of the point system. Now let's talk about a few other best practices you need to consider. For points to influence behavior and actions, there should be minimal delay between the action taken by the learner, such as answering a question, and the rewarding of the points. You want to provide the points to the learner as quickly as possible. This immediate or quick feedback helps reinforce desired behavior and lets the learner know if they've answered correctly or incorrectly. If the learner gets it wrong, the immediate feedback helps to correct misconceptions.
