Add reference lines and quartile indicators
When you create a visualization, Tableau builds it from your data using the rules and conventions of the style you selected. You can add other elements, such as reference lines or distributions, to compliment the built in features of your viz. In this movie, I will show you how to add those additional elements. My sample file is 10_05_reference, and you can find it in the Chapter_10 folder of the Exercise Files collection. In this workbook, I have the count of sales for solar panels, so we're not looking at the quantity of solar panels ordered, just the number of orders themselves. And let's say that I want to identify the average number of sales and then draw a line horizontally across the graph to indicate it. I can do that by adding a reference line. So I will right click the vertical axis which shows count of sales, and then at the bottom there is add reference line clicking that displays the add reference line, band or box dialog box.
