Asking follow-up questions
- Follow-up questions are critical in skill-first interviews, especially when using the STAR method. These questions can help interviewers further understand a candidate's skill, experiences, and behaviors. For example, by asking a candidate's role in a team project, interviewers can find out how the candidate contributed, how they work with others, and how they manage interpersonal challenges. Follow-up questions can also clarify any misunderstanding and eliminate any confusion, and it's not just for the interviewer. Follow-up questions can improve the candidate's experience too. It shows that you're engaged and that you are genuinely interested in knowing about their experiences and skills. And finally, follow-up questions can help you understand what motivates and demotivates the candidate as well as the working style and personality.
