How to choose the right GIS data formats for Projects
- [Instructor] Should you do your projects in vector or raster data formats? Typically, I find that real world GIS projects will incorporate both vector and raster data. One of the most powerful qualities of Arc GIS and Arc GIS Pro is the ability to convert and analyze vector and raster data. Let's take a look at some of the kinds of geography in both the vector and the raster formats and some decisions about what format might be best. Here I've created an example for us in Arc GIS Pro. I've downloaded a local raster digital elevation model of a park I like to visit on Lake Michigan's Shore. Here you can see an overhead view of the dune system and where the point is located is the terminus of a boardwalk that I like to go to. Now, I've often wondered what is the ideal trail direction that we might build a new trail from that boardwalk end all the way to the Lakeshore beyond the woods? Well, Arc GIS and Arc GIS Pro can do this…
