Current state of quantum cryptography innovation

- [Instructor] Quantum cryptography is available to use today. Many innovative cybersecurity companies offer basic quantum key distribution, or QKD, solutions. That said, significant limitations for this promising technology continue to exist. These include problems with long-distance transmission of keys and cost, with implementations at scale being restrictively expensive. Many of the most promising capabilities of quantum cryptography currently remain experimental and in the lab. There are many different types of QKD implementations, ranging from basic to the complex, with discussion of the latter being beyond the scope of this basic course. In all instances, encryption and transmission techniques utilize the unique qualities of the quantum realm. Superposition and entanglement are central enablers.
