- The last process mining capability we'll introduce is machine learning. This is a generic name for a growing set of features that intelligently guide analysts to meaningful insights by examining large quantities of data. Due to the fact that machine learning works best with structured data, it's easier to implement with process models that were created with event log capture. The main form of machine learning you'll come across is process simulation, which works by calculating what the process would look like if certain variables are changed. For instance, you could predict what the measurable outcomes would be if a specific process step was automated or if another was skipped. Algorithms calculate the likely outcome based on existing data, showing you what the effects of such changes could be on cost, throughput time, and resource usage.
