Frame the decision: Subconscious and deliberate
- When you are choosing between options, be careful about the words you use because it's amazing how they can bias your decision. For example, doctors who were considering using a risky medical procedure were twice as likely to choose it if it was described as 90% safe than if they were told there was a 10% chance of it going wrong. Often, people use framing as a way to deliberately influence someone else, but we also tend to frame things in a biased way without realizing it. The word "framing" comes from our frame of reference. We can't help seeing the sun set from our frame of reference, even though we know the sun isn't moving. It's the earth that's rotating really. And in the same way, we look at things from the point of view of ourselves, or our department, or our organization, or our country.
