- In the chaotic, fast-paced world of business, scheduling is vital. Without good scheduling, your company is probably wasting employee time, poorly utilizing equipment, allowing certain materials to go to waste, and potentially missing opportunities to satisfy more customers. These types of errors are the types of things that can get managers fired. This is why at every level, over every time horizon, scheduling is a priority. For example, companies create capacity plans for the next few years. Capacity plans may try to account for future facilities or the adoption of updated equipment. Aggregate plans are often used in manufacturing. These types of schedules tend to plan for the next few months. Aggregate plans try to figure out how to fill large customer orders and in the process, how fully utilize the company's facilities and employees. Production plans are often used to plan for only the next few weeks. And short-term scheduling works to maximize output on a weekly, if not daily…
