- You may have heard the expression, "the medium is the message," which is attributed to Marshall McLuhan. What he meant is that the format in which we communicate has at least as much bearing on how the message is perceived as the words themselves. What's that got to do with our UX maps? Well, when we share the maps with people, they'll take away a lot of extra information based on how we present the maps to them. For instance, a scrappy, handwritten, sticky-note covered experience map sends a message of team collaboration, iteration, and exploration. In contrast, a digitally-designed, color-printed, tabloid-size journey map, sends a message of finality, with the important decisions already made, and the findings laid out in bullet point summary form, and that's fine, most of the time.
