- [Instructor] Artificial intelligence or AI has emerged as a significant tool and enhancement to organizational capability and has both positive and risk implications for data management and governance. It can seem that AI simply appeared overnight. In reality, AI has been an area of research and development since the 1950s. It's only now that we've reached the nexus of computing performance, storage, big data, networking, and sophisticated algorithms that AI has entered the mainstream in a big way. Before I discuss the role of AI and data governance, let's establish a definition. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines AI as, "The capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior." I like this definition. Simulating human activities by a machine is at the heart of AI capability today.
