AI roles, responsibilities, and authorities: Clause 5.3
- [Instructor] On April 20th, 2010, an explosion occurred on the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion killed 11 men, caused the oil rig to sink, and started a catastrophic oil leak of 134 million gallons of oil that took three months to seal. It was the largest offshore oil spill in US history. It created incomprehensible devastation, requiring BP to compensate the Environmental Trustee for $8.8 billion to restore the injured environment. One critical issue precipitating the disaster was the lack of clarity regarding who was responsible for crucial safety decisions and procedures. Disputes and confusion about roles and responsibility between BP, Transocean, and Halliburton led to oversight and accountability gaps. Sub Clause 5.3 declares that top management must ensure that the responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are assigned and communicated within the organization.
