- For your first book, and it certainly worked for me, I think it's a good idea to plot out your story. Now for me, I just literally do chapter one to chapter 30 and I do a couple lines for each chapter. What's going to happen in that chapter? What's the key event in that chapter? And then, when you look back, you'll see where the holes in your plot are. You'll see momentum. Momentum is very important in a book. How do you maintain momentum? And again, this can be tricky halfway through the book because the beginning, you're setting it all up. You're introducing the characters. You know what's going to happen at the end, and it's the middle you've got to keep that momentum going. You've got to keep the reader wanting to hear more, wanting to find out more, wanting to figure out more. So if you do that little chapter breakdown, it won't take that long, it can seem daunting, but it actually isn't really, and just do a couple…
