Standard file formats in use on iPhone

- Your iPhone offers multiple formats to capture, and it's going to vary depending upon the application that you actually use. Now, if you're used to shooting on a digital camera, you're probably familiar with JPEG. JPEG files have been around forever, and they're broadly compatible with reasonable file sizes. The challenges with JPEGs though, is that things like exposure information and color temperature really get baked in. So it's very difficult to edit these files to recover information. Now, most iPhone these days use a newer file format called HEIC, a high efficiency image codec. These files are very much like JPEG. They just take up less space. So you can get the same image quality as a JPEG in about half the file size. To control which one you're using is very simple. All you need to do is go into your system preferences on your phone.
