How do I make believable depth of field effects in After Effects?
- After Effects gives you the ability to manipulate depth of field. And there's lots of ways of doing this but what I want to show you is the camera lens blur effect. This can be really quite useful and can react to footage information or a depth map that you provide. Now, in order to get a depth of field effect, you'll often want things that appear further away from the camera to fall out of focus. That's what we have happening here. You'll notice that the background is a bit blurry. If I turn the camera lens blur effect on and off, you can see how that's actually affecting things quite nicely. In order for this effect to work, you need to have a layer that accurately describes things. So in this case here, you'll see we've got our completed background. It's a stock photo of mine but what I need to create is more of a depth map and that's what this is here. I isolated the elements to define it. So what you can do is…
