- I mentioned in a previous lesson that there are hundreds of cloud providers to choose from. So why are we focusing on AWS in this course, and what options are available to us from various cloud providers? In order to understand the options, we need to understand this concept of as a service. So whenever the cloud was born, you know, about 25 years ago or so, late '90s, early 2000s, someone came up with this software as a service idea, and that is that that extreme transition to operational expenditure. If I am purchasing, for example, MySQL as a service, MySQL is a database engine, runs on whatever. If I'm purchasing MySQL as a service, then I'm paying someone else to manage the Rackspace, the power, the cooling, the server, the operating system on the server, the installation of MySQL, and the maintenance of MySQL.
