Images, surfaces, and raster layers
- Did you know that there are over 2000 active satellites orbiting the earth every day. Some of these satellites go around the earth once every 12 hours and some do it in just 90 minutes. They're all collecting information about the earth's surface, taking pictures and making measurements. A lot of this data can be added directly into a GIS. In addition to satellites, government agencies and private companies are flying airplanes and drones with data collection devices attached. These vehicles fly much closer to the ground and collect very detailed pictures. They also measure the heights of buildings and trees, determine the location of power lines and collect information about vegetation health. This data is called remotely sensed data. Many remotely sensed datasets are stored as raster data. Raster data sets are made up of a bunch of pixels. Just like you see when you zoom in really close on a picture, you've taken with…
