Essential map comprehension
- You may be used to looking at navigational maps on your phone, but it's rare to have to really understand the fine details on those maps. I mean, generally I just listen to know when I have to turn and in which direction. But when looking at a GIS map, it's important to understand the bit about map reading, and map comprehension. So I'm going to go over a few essentials. First, every map should have a legend or a table of contents that explains the layers on the map, and explains the colors and symbols that were used for each layer. Is that red line a road, or a county boundary? Is that green blob of forest, or a field of corn? So the first thing you should do when you look at a GIS map or any map for that matter, is to look for a legend, so that you can understand what the colors and symbols on the map mean. Like in this map, looking at the legend, I can see the red areas are karst prone. These are areas…
