Create vs. manage content

- [Instructor] While we're talking about what content management systems do, I think we need to have a bit of a conversation about what they don't do also. A lot of companies dive into CMS expecting it to solve problems for them, only to wind up with expensive and unused systems. First of all, CMS does not create content. It manages it, but it's people who do the creation. You cannot expect to have a successful content management system if you don't have the staff to support it and a plan for how content will be organized and utilized. It's been my experience that most people have no idea of the amount of effort required to have a steady cadence of publishable content. If you've ever tried to blog or keep a regular newsletter going, you know just what I'm talking about. Make sure you allow time and resources. A CMS also doesn't give you any guarantee that your content is going to be any good either. Sure, it'll improve the technical aspects of management and distribution, but making sure it makes sense, well that's up to you along with making sure that anything you publish is pertinent and suitable for the audiences you're trying to reach.
