Discovering networks with inSSIDer
- [Instructor] A number of the older tools for network testing such as NetStumbler are not well suited to modern testing practice. But there are more recent tools available, inSSIDer is a replacement tool for NetStumbler, and a personal use version can be downloaded from the website shown. Note that the personal version, inSSIDer 4, is a paid but low cost shareware product. InSIDDer can be used for detecting wireless networks and for identifying network strength during a walkaround or wardrive. InSSIDer is simple but effective, let's take a look at what it can do. On starting inSIDDer the main screen shows the detected networks in it's logical view. The WiFi menu item shows the WiFi adapters, in my case the internal WiFi adapter has been selected for the scan. I can select a Atheros, my external alpha antenna, and inSIDDer will switch to that for it's collection. The pane at the bottom left provides a graph of signal…
