Using the Smart Insert to bypass setting timeline in and out points
- [Instructor] Continuing from our previous movie, let's talk about smart inserting because there's a quicker way of setting in and out points. So let's go ahead and pull up this shot here of the women as they're looking and working on this hammock. I'm going to double click it to bring it up. And we've already dropped in down here on the timeline a close up to a pullout. But what if we want to also get a little bit more of that hand working maybe with the scissors there and we want to kind of keep them together. So we're putting together this select reel. We've got this close up that pulls to a zoom out but there's also this interesting section here where the are cutting some yarn which I could see being as useful B-roll. So I'll select that section here, mark that out, and now I want to insert it into the select reel but put it right after this shot here without moving my current time indicator. If you notice on the large timeline, the bottom timeline is this little caret pointing down and it seems to be animated, right? This is called your smart indicator. If I use the smart insert command which is right here, smart insert. What resolve is going to do is cut this clip using our current in and out point, but insert it not where I'm parked but at the nearest edit point. Now sometimes the nearest edit point is to the left of you. Sometimes the nearest edit point is to the right and nearest based on the clip that I'm under. So if I were to move my current time indicator let's use the top timeline for that. On this side, Well, now my smart indicator is to the right of me indicating this edit. If I put myself back over here this nearest edit is to the left. And if I just down a little bit keep an eye on that smart indicator. Now the smart indicator, if I use the same command, this smart insert command, it's now going to drop this clip to the right side of where I'm sitting. So let's bring it back so we're nearer to the left side. Let's use a smart indicator, keep an eye down here as you see what goes on. So this clip has just been added at the nearest edit point which in this case was to the left of me. And then my current time indicator is placed at the end of that clip. So the smart indicator is that little caret that's animating it updates depending where your current time indicator is in relation to the nearest edit point. And when you use the smart indicator command that's where your edit is going to get dropped. It saves you from having to add some extra edit points.
