The current problem
- As a data analyst, you'll often get asked to visualize a set of data from an important business stakeholder with very little direction. It's your job to understand what's being asked, and more importantly, why. In this lesson, I'll teach you about some of the problems with the way information is being requested and consumed in today's business environment, so you can start anticipating how to navigate it best. One of the main issues stems from the increasing pace of business in today's world. When an executive is asking for data or reports, they typically have very little time to consume the information being given to them. This creates a problem for data analysts, as they have to work on translating years worth of data into quick action items for end users. Additionally, these business users are typically not very analytically savvy, meaning the use of complex formulas or complicated charts will often not help them understand the story behind the data. Typically, executives want to visualize things in simple terms, such as good or bad, up or down, or green or red. However, these asks can make it challenging for you as a data analyst who has to transform very complicated datasets into simple terms, which often don't tell the whole story. One final problem in communicating data to business users occurs when the people requesting data analysis have a very specific idea of what the data should tell them. This can lead to tunnel vision when the data shows an outcome that they weren't hoping for or weren't expecting. Business users can have a hard time accepting the results of data analysis. It's your job as a data analyst to portray the data truthfully and accurately in a way that they will understand. Overall, there are many challenges faced by data analysts in today's corporate world. A key to mitigating them is learning how to communicate findings and datasets in a simple way that tells the whole story of the data.
