- [Instructor] Images are incredibly influential. They persuade, invite, entertain and inspire. Part of the power of imagery is representation. Being represented in media can be empowering and affirming, but many people never share this experience. Rather than seeing themselves represented and supported, they receive the opposite message. Dr. Nicole Martins describes this experience as symbolic annihilation, which is the idea that if you don't see people like yourself in the media you consume, you must somehow be unimportant. Inclusive imagery sends a message to potential employees and stakeholders about your organization's priorities and values. It quickly establishes whether minority experiences are important to you.
