Pitfalls to avoid when writing inclusive copy

- [Instructor] Maya Angelou's famous words, "Do the best you can until you know better. "Then when you know better, do better," are so helpful for me as I grow in my inclusive copywriting skills. There are several pitfalls in writing inclusive copy that I'd like to help you avoid, specifically to avoid using mental health challenges as synonyms or metaphors, using colloquialisms, using gender as a replacement for a trait and using ableist language. Have you ever heard someone say the weather was bipolar when the sunshine returned after a sudden rainstorm. This is an example of using a mental health challenge as a synonym. Other examples include someone saying they were being ADD when they were momentarily distracted or saying they were being OCD While meticulously organizing. Sometimes people will use mental health terms as metaphors, like saying they're depressed when they mean they are sad or describing themselves as anxious when they mean stressed.
