Avoiding tokenism and stereotyping in images
- [Instructor] Inclusion efforts can be damaging if the audience doesn't believe that the efforts are genuine. Initially, it can feel like an overwhelming task to distinguish between genuine and disingenuous inclusivity in images. There are two pitfalls you should avoid when selecting inclusive imagery, tokenism and stereotyping. Tokenism as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary is the practice of doing something such as selecting an image which includes a person from a minority group only to prevent criticism and give the appearance that people are being treated fairly. In imagery, it's easiest to see when we're looking at images of groups of people. A photo that avoids tokenism would be one where there is more than just one contrasting factor between people in the frame, diversity of more than one trait of racial and ethnic background, age, body size and shape, use of assistive technologies, socioeconomic expression.…
