- It's hard to take people seriously when they say one thing and do another. Having leaders espouse the behaviors deemed virtuous, and having them use that as a signal to others will go a long way in shifting the behavior of the organization. There are several key elements that I have found helpful in enabling such a transformation. First, be supportive. Your role as a leader is to be a teacher, mentor, coach, all in service to your staff. It's not to be able to boss people around. Provide an environment that is free for strategic experimentation and be okay when things don't go as planned 100% of the time. At the same time, focus on improving outcomes. The journey is important, but the destination is what people mostly remember. Don't lose sight of the intended outcome, what you're trying to achieve together.
