Understanding Dimensional Modeling
- [Instructor] All right. So Dimensional Modeling is a data modeling methodology that centers around measuring a business process. The business processes are known as facts, and when we measure business processes, we need ways to describe those measurements. And for this, we will use dimensions as report labels and or filters. The combination of facts and dimensions is known as a Star Schema or a Dimensional Model. The business process that we are working on in this class is a sales model. So as you can imagine, you have an operational system out there that is collecting sales. So as customers purchase items from you, those transactions are being recorded individually. And as those transactions are being recorded, descriptions of those sales amounts are occurring as well. So a certain customer bought that, they were in a certain sales territory, a certain product was bought, and they were bought on a given date.
