Cloud cost observability
- Once we've monitored most of the cloud usage, including prices and cost, we can also look at cloud cost observability as an essential aspect of FinOps. This is understanding the cost and usage patterns, not just looking at the raw data. For example, it's essential to understand that storage costs have risen for the last year and that the finance group has been the enterprise's primary consumer of storage services. However, what's likely more helpful is what that means. Using this example, FinOps observability may also tell us why something is occurring. For instance, finance is using more storage due to their increased volume of transactions. Moreover, this increase in transactions was caused by unexpected economic growth. This helpful information, beyond just the raw data from cost accounting, allows us to have a deeper understanding of why something is occurring and thus aids us in planning for future consumption.
