Lesson 3: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

(electronic music) - [Instructor] Earlier in the course when we discussed IP version 4 addressing, we talked about the theory of dynamic host configuration protocol, or DHCP. That's a way that a client, like a PC, can boot up and obtain IP address information from a server rather than having to go to every client and statically configure an IP address, it makes administration a lot easier. And we talked about the theory of DHCP then, but in this lesson we want to get into the configuration of DHCP on a Cisco iOS router. Before jumping into the lesson though, let's do a quick review of how DHCP works. In this topology we have a couple of PCs, a couple of clients, PC A and PC B, that want to get IP address information, and I have DHCP server, and PC A will say it boots up first, and it's going to go in search of a DHCP server, and you might remember the acronym that we discussed earlier.
