- According to the global internal audit standards, "The internal audit function should use technology to improve its effectiveness and efficiency." This sounds easy enough. I mean, technology has been around for decades, but we're talking about more than just upgrading your email client here. One example of a technology that internal audit functions can be using is an audit management system. Think of this as your command center for tracking everything from when it's time to grab your magnifying glass and put on your audit detective hat to the time that the audit is due. You can also use governance, risk management and control process mapping applications. I know that's a mouthful, but imagine being able to visualize risk across the entire organization, kind of like a pirate's treasure map.
