AI Opportunities: What should learning designers be excited about?

- AIs aren't just any assistance. They are your creative partners, ready to help you implement any idea at any time, and that includes the grunt work. So I want you to make a list of where you'd like more support. When you think about designing learning experiences, what tasks do you wish you could spend less time on so you can focus on what matters most to you? Go ahead and make that list now. I want you to write down your top three items. Now take one item from that list and let's delegate it to a member of your AI team. One of the tasks that takes a lot of my time is creating rubrics that are aligned to different assignments and projects. Let me show you how I delegate this to my AI team member. So here we are in ChatGPT. Now, the tool isn't important because you are going to use a variety of tools and they'll likely change over time. What I want you to pay attention to are the prompts. That's how you'll get comfortable delegating to your AI team. We'll start with this prompt. I'm a learning experience designer. How might you help me with creating rubrics? For each task, share what you can do and what I should focus on in a table. And just like that, we have a nice set of responses organized in a table. Now, remember, this is where you can refine and edit. You are always the leader of your AI team, making the final decisions about what to use and what not to use. What's unique about this prompt is it asks the AI to weigh in on how it can help you best, just like you might do with a teammate. In fact, a 2024 Work Trend Index report by Microsoft and LinkedIn said, power users start every task by asking, how can AI help me? If you can start leaning on your AI team like this, you are going to see incredible results. 90% of those surveyed in the Work Trend Index say using AI tools help them save time. 84% share that it helps them focus on their most important tasks and 85% say it makes work more enjoyable. And by being here, it's your turn to experience these results as well. So let's look at three other areas where you might ask a similar question and see how AI can help. Number one, personalization of learning. Picture a classroom where every learner feels the course is designed just for them. A 2024 study by Gallup shared that six in 10 Gen Z learners are most excited about learning when the teacher makes it interesting. By asking learners what their interests are and analyzing data on how learners prefer to interact with content, we can use AI tools to adjust the pace, level, and learning materials to make learning interesting for every individual. Number two, faster content creation. Now imagine cutting down the development time from weeks to just days or even hours, all while enhancing the quality of your content. This is where AI comes to the rescue by automating the creation of quizzes, simulations, and helping you create scenario-based examples and even entire lessons. Number three, adapting to change. From the classroom to the corporate world, the ability to navigate change is a non-negotiable. Thomas Friedman and many others have been telling us this for a long time. In his book, "Thank You for Being Late: an Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations," he says adapting is like riding a bicycle. To stay balanced and make progress, you have to keep moving. With every learning experience, we help our learners pedal forward, not only teaching them how to adapt, but also how to anticipate and prepare for what's next. And one of the most important human skills we integrate into the learning experiences is soft skills. Skills like adaptability, leadership, communication, problem solving, and integrity. As technology advances, the demand for these soft skills will only increase. So those are the three more areas that you can ask your AI teammate to help you develop learning experiences for. And as we embrace these opportunities, we must also be aware of the challenges that come with them. Let's explore what those are and how we can navigate them together in the next movie.
