- As we embrace the era of generative AI in healthcare, it's not just a technological upgrade, it's a paradigm shift, but a common knee-jerk response is often, "Will it take away jobs?" And while it's true that the first generation of generative AI in healthcare will redefine some roles more than others, this wave will most likely focus on automating repetitive and data intensive nonclinical tasks, but let me offer some reassurance. Contrary to popular belief, generative AI is more commonly expected to be more of a job creator. A recent McKinsey analysis found that roughly two and three employers see AI as a net creator of jobs. So how do we prepare for these new roles? There will be plenty of opportunities to access generative AI as it's rolled out in many of the software platforms we all use, like ChatGPT, or as Copilots in Microsoft Word or Excel, but dedicated pre-skilling will be needed to get the workforce ready for a future with generative AI tools.
