- On a soccer team, the team usually needs all of the roles of a team to score a goal and, likewise, to defend. Getting the ball all the way down the field and through the opposing team's defense into the scoring goal takes a cross-functional team. The goalie throws out the ball, a defender or midfielder moves the ball up to the forwards, and the forwards pass the ball and manipulate the opposing team's defense to score. A soccer team does not win and score by having each role play their own game and act as a separate team. They all work together on a common mission. They are a cross-functional team. In software development or other business change work, it's no different. On a software team, this means business and user stakeholders, front-end developers, middleware, back-end development, data, quality assurance, user experience, business analysis skills, and more all come together to form a cross-functional team.
