\r\n Maybe I am not very smart, but am I the only one that gets confused by all the different offerings and all the different colors of products and then the colors of pads and then the colors of towels? Is there ONE company that does it all really well? For a while it seemed it was Sonus, then Chemical Guys, then Adams, Meguires...the list goes on and on.\r\n

\r\n Simply my opinion here but for me it’s a NO. Don’t get me wrong here. I sincerely believe that a person could choose for example Poorboys, Meguiars or McKee’s 37 (there are others) product lines and have vehicles that are simply top notch as an end result in every aspect of the detail. That said, I’m someone that finds favorites for what ever reason, if only for a short period of time. While I can get perfectly acceptable results from a single product line, it doesn’t mean that their products are my favorites across the board.\r\n

Griot`s Garage followed by Megs. I can`t think of any other company that is top notch from top to bottom or has everything you`d need in one single company.\r\n

\r\n I tend to shop a few very long-time companies for certain products they sell that fit my business plan and give me the best results..
\nNo one place has everything that passes my stringent quality control/assurance process, to my knowledge..
\nI purchase from a select few companies that have been around long enough that I can see their work history and feel confident that I am getting what I am paying for..
\nIt all depends on what your needs are, and are they just temporary or long term needs, etc...

\r\n I personally like different things from different companies. When you are new at this it is normal to feel that way. I started all poorboys. Worked great for me. I still use a lot of their products. They along with Ron gave me most of my early education on all things detailing.\r\n

\r\n Meguiar`s has nearly everything a car guy needs. While they may not be the best in every category, they don`t really have any junk either. 117 years in the business doesn`t happen by accident. There are some missing products like coatings, but they have almost every category well covered. I buy products from a few select companies who have demonstrated commitment to excellence in product breadth, quality and to customer support.\r\n

\r\n Even though I use a mix of brands for just about everything, IMO we`re splitting hairs based on individual preferences. It`s not like somebody`s vehicle would look better "if he`d just quit using all-[whatever brand] stuff".
\n
\njared6180- Maybe some of your confusion is from giving a lot of consideration to stuff that doesn`t really matter. Other than the convenience of using pads that color-code by intended use, I wouldn`t give any thought at all to the color of products. Only reason I`d care about colors of MFs is that contamination shows up easier on light colors so I don`t want dark ones.
\n
\nSorta-related, I don`t *use* all that much stuff and/so it`s easy to keep track of the few products I do use regularly. If you only have a few products on the shelf...
\n
\nFor any non-Pro, I`d hope that polishing is such a rare occurrence that keeping the pads straight might be tough simply because they haven`t been thought about for years. If a non-Pro uses any compounding/polishing Pads often enough to remember what they are then I`d worry about "why all the correction?!?"\r\n

\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n I would second the use of Meguiar`s products that fit the bill for professional and hobbyist detailer alike. I`ve used all three vehicle product lines: Consumer, Professional, and Detailer. I like the Detailer Line because it is cost-effective and produces the results I like.
\nThat said, there is a reason that there are SOOO many car-care chemical manufacturers out there. Each has their niche and advantage. I have been using Optimum Polymer Technology products more and these four REALLY stand out for me as a hobbyist:
\n1) Power Clean All-Purpose Cleaner. Expensive, but a great degreaser and cleaner for exterior work. Try it on tail pipes FULL STREGTH to remove carbon build-up or to remove road paint on vinyl trim/lower body cladding.
\n2) Optimum Metal Polish. Really good at cleaning chrome and offering some protection for metals. Really good for bug residue without scratching chrome or brushed aluminum/stainless steel trim. Try it on tail pipe tips after cleaning them with Power Clean.
\n3) Opti-Bond Tire Gel. This one I tried as a suggestion from members in this forum for a no-gloss-natural-rubber shine. Works as advertised AND I`ve used it on plastic wheel wells to get them back to that new black plastic look. The down side is it does not last for more than 3-4 weeks, but I`ll live with that. Easy to apply with a tire sponge without the `slime" and sling or having a tire shinier than the paint.
\n4) Optimum Carpet and Fabric Cleaner & Protectant This one was also from suggestions by Autopians. I had used Power Clean on carpet floor mats but the industrial smell was terrible and lingered for weeks. So I thought this would be a good alternative and it is. Cleans very well on tough stains with a pleasant smell. Works great on fabric headliners with a microfiber towel-only wipe/extraction method (You DO clean the interior roof headliner, don`t you??)
\nExpensive, but it does work, especially on fabric seats. If you have kids or clean soccer-mom vans or SUVs, OC&FC&P might be worth considering adding to your car-car chemical cleaning arsenal.
\n
\n
\nI must add, if you want to try Chemical Guy`s products, check out your local Walmart. Here in Green Bay, WI they are stocking some of their products. Yes, they are more expensive than their usual car-care product offerings (at least for the usual Walmart shopper), so they may be in Clearance Isle if you wait long enough.
\n
\nAnd if you have been on the fence about McKee`s 37 products, go to their website and check out the Car Care Kit 12 Pack (actually 13 as a bonus) offering for $149.99 plus shipping of 16 oz. (or 8 oz) products combinations that you can mix-n-match from. If PA Detailer is correct, this may be a very good opportunity to try them and see how good they really are and still be left with enough product for additional uses to make your own evaluation of.\r\n

\r\n I will start by saying I use the best products I can find which means using multiple companies.
\n
\nFor this discussion I`m going to play the other side and say yes. There are many shops and companies out there that use one company of system and it works well. Look at Meg`s or even 3D. They have an entire detailer line that will work for everything you could want as far as detailing. Are there better options available from other companies? Sure; but it doesn`t make their product bad. \r\n

\r\n Griots Garage, McKees 37, Sonax, Optimum Technologies, and Meguiars all have great full product lines for both pro`s and weekend warriors.
\nI personally use a mixture of all these companies products as some out there do work better than others for my specific needs and environment.
\n
\nIf I had to choose just one it would be hard but it would be a close tie between Griots Garage and Meguiars. Granted I have not used every single product in each of these companies line ups but I have used a good amount of them from their compounds/ polishes/ pads, glass cleaners, wash soaps, towels, interior cleaners and dressings, wheel cleaners, and trim dressings etc. They are widely pretty available and the price points are very reasonable as well.\r\n

What years are we talking about here? I havent been around that long. lol
\nMaybe thats why they are such a close tie for me and to be honest that may have been before my foray into "real" detailing. What I did back when I was younger could not be considered anything but hack work by my now/ autopia standards and back in the day I thought armor-all/ turtle wax were amazing products. Though I do remember buying Megs Gold Class when it first dropped and loved it.\r\n

From my limited experience with griots before this forum to now, without a doubt in my mind the transformation from where they were to now is because of Jeff Brown. He was the main driver in the pfm, boss system (polishers, compounds, polishes, waxes, etc), and many others. I certainly use other brands besides griots such as 3d and McKees, but when it comes to polishing I`m sold on the boss system.
\n@mikelambert would be a good one to chime in on griots given his transition to them recently.

Wasn`t the change Jeff Brown taking over product development there? It seems like he`s steered it into a serious detailing company instead of a "Brookstone" or "Sharper Image" one. Maybe that`s a little too simplistic, but that`s the best I can do this morning.\r\n

Wasn`t the change Jeff Brown taking over product development there? It seems like he`s steered it into a serious detailing company instead of a "Brookstone" or "Sharper Image" one. Maybe that`s a little too simplistic, but that`s the best I can do this morning.

So in that scenario it was like Brookstone or Sharper Image in that they used their clever catalog to sell stuff as unique that maybe wasn`t. But then some years ago they hired their own chemists, and capped that with Brownie to develop the BOSS line. So rather than "down to earth" I`d say more like they lifted themselves up to (apparently) first tier supplier.\r\n

\r\n I think it depends on how many purpose-built products you want/need. Think "pad cleaner" or "headlight coating." McKee`s comes to mind to cover nearly every base.

\r\n Some of the company`s mentioned so far do not answer the OP`s question of "Does one company have it all?" unless you intend on compounding and polishing everything by hand. This is why I said GG is 1st followed by Megs, they have their own polishers and complete lineup of everything else you`d need.\r\n

\r\n I think you`ll be fine with sticking with a brand for each job you`re trying to accomplish. eg. For polishing you could use the BOSS system with Griots, coatings and prep with CarPro, etc. It would be silly to have blind loyalty to a brand instead of choosing the best products for your needs.\r\n

\r\n Griots as a one stop shop is hard to beat. I currently use their interior products, machines and pads, spray wax, speed shine and best of show detailer. Used other products in the past, but all work well. I happen to enjoy mixing and matching, but in a pinch I would stick with Griots without worry. As a bonus you can get a lot of product locally and it is the same stuff they sell online. Much less confusing than dealing with Meguiar`s multiple lines.\r\n

Well, it`s not like I pay a LOT of attention...I think it`s over on AGO one of the members links to a lot of Griot`s videos, and a few years ago there was one of Richard in the lab with the chemists making decisions about stuff, and Brownie (Jeff Brown) was kind of front and center when the BOSS polishing system was released.
\n
\nAt some point I think they pictured their bottling operation in the catalog...I don`t know if they are actually blending there, or just bottling. It`s always amused me the places that don`t blend but only bottle...I don`t know if that is just for cost savings, or if it looks to laymen like they "make" the stuff if they are bottling it, or if it`s to keep the warehouse employees from knowing exactly which product that`s coming in is going into which bottle...instead of looking at the return address on the box of pre-bottled stuff.

\r\nWow, Richard Griot is getting up there in years! I remember way back when he was just a young whippersnapper...
\r\n
\r\nSomething was mentioned about sniffing coffee grounds in between sniff testing and one of the ladies said it was a "myth"...
\r\n
\r\nI dont know if it IS a myth or not, but if one goes into Nordstrom`s, which by the way, also began in Seattle, and is one of the more prestigious stores out here on the West Coast,
\r\nthey always have some of the nicest coffee beans to smell between samples at the women`s perfume counter or the men`s cologne counter..
\r\n
\r\nI personally found this method to work very well for me...

\r\n Setec Astronomy- Thanks for the thumbnail sketch. Your visits to AGO and YouTube viewing are still a lot more exposure to the Detailing World than I get, as I only frequent Autopia.
\n
\nI`ll admit I wonder why people get into such Detailing Product Exposure that the silly-numerous different product lines become any kind of issue. IMO you can just ignore 99% of all the Detailing stuff out there and still do perfectly good work. I suppose it`s concern about missing out on the next greatest thing.\r\n

Well I was certainly on the flavor-of-the-month/next greatest thing bandwagon for a while, but I think I`ve mostly gotten over that...well, somewhat gotten over that. But it took you some time/experience to come to your opinion that you can ignore the 99% (which I`ll take to mean you can get good results with most products)...think about the newb who just got a new car and wants to maintain it and being overwhelmed...and endeavors to study/understand the silly-numerous different product lines. I dunno...probably some diffs between people`s perceptions and my experience. I sure did try lots of different stuff, mostly a waste in hindsight, but I kinda enjoyed it back then and didn`t mind it it consumed a lot of [resources].
\n
\nI eventually found that just concentrating on the processes, what`s actually going on and why (e.g., why does paint get marred during the wash? Why did the A8 get etched so terribly despite fresh wax? Why...) was the most beneficial thing I can do. Since then I have basically avoided Buyer`s Remorse and been able to keep our vehicles the way I want them without Detailing consuming a huge chunk of my life.
\n
\nBut *NO*, I did not mean to imply that people can do OK with most products! IMO many Detailing Products are a complete misfire/waste. I don`t know how people do OK with some of the [stuff] I`ve tried or withOUT some things I consider essential. But OK, whatever works for `em.
\n
\nWhat I meant was more like, uhm...most people oughta just ignore most products/lines/maybe even processes. Keeping it *very* simple and basic is probably sufficient for most people, and enough of a challenge too. I`d think that "keep your car clean and shiny without marring it up, and protect it from cosmetic damage caused by use and the environment" is more than enough for most people.
\n
\nThere are a lot of product lines I`ve simply never paid any attention to, and I don`t consider it any type of loss. But eh, bet people say that about the FK1000P I recommend too, but note that I ignore everything else they sell (possible exception is FK425).
\n
\nI do get the "it`s overwhelming" part, but I suspect most people just don`t go about researching/studying Detailing the way they would some other subjects, the "more important" subjects.

Agree, doing the wrong thing generally turns out badly no matter what you`re using. My Inner Cranky Old Guy keeps suspecting that people just don`t invest the time/effort to understand this stuff because hey, "it`s just car wax". Not like many spend a few dozen hours intensely studying [INSERT Detailing Topic] the way they would [INSERT challenging College Course].
\n
\nThough once again I find myself with a bit of that Cognitive Dissonance because...
\n
\nI`ve found that switching to certain products *completely* changed the game for me. Kinda incredible actually...take away a few things and there`s no way our vehicles would be this good with so little work. And some of the products that absolutely weren`t right for me still get recommended (and are presumably used by those recommending them). OK, different people are different...but still, I do wonder "what the.." a lot.
\n
\nI find myself thinking "get an understanding of this stuff and then buy X,Y, and Z and there you go, oughta be easy peasy." But then I`m not analyzing my results with a glossmeter or otherwise being Uber-Autopian either (other than the "nobody/nothing touches the paint).\r\n

Does One Company Have it all?
Maybe I am not very smart, but am I the only one that gets confused by all the different offerings and all the different colors of products and then the colors of pads and then the colors of towels? Is there ONE company that does it all really well? For a while it seemed it was Sonus, then Chemical Guys, then Adams, Meguires...the list goes on and on.
