The Kimberley Art Prize (KAP) has been facilitated by the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley (SDWK) since 1970, following a suggestion by the then Shire Clerk to run an annual art competition for residents of the Kimberley region. It was a non-acquisitive prize until 1978 but since the SDWK acquired the winner each year and now owns a substantial art collection produced by some of the most talented artists in the region.
The KAPP has grown to become a highly respected art award in the Australian arts industry; is one of the most remote art competitions in Australia and one of the longest-running art prizes in Western Australia and is not only open to the Kimberley residents but also to all artist in Australia.
It starts every year with the well-known Boab Festival and opens the exhibition for two weeks. this 2024, the opening night will be held at the Derby Airport on the evening of Saturday, June 29th, with the exhibition running for the following two weeks.
Since 2021, this exhibition has had over 1000 visitors each year, therefore providing a space for tourists and locals to interact and allowing the visitors to acquire the unique piece of art from Kimberley.
