Painting: In the Corner

''In the Corner'' is a beautiful study of the female form in a timeless and atmospheric setting. Cobley says: "My paintings are almost entirely about the figure - the human form as it is illuminated, as well as concealed, by the light that falls upon it or around it. Using the effects of light, painting can create the illusion of solid form in space; while at the same time blur distinctions between the two''.

Using soft light and shade ''In the Corner'' creates and atmospheric study of the folds of a crumpled sheet contrasted with the smooth skin of the model. It is typical of David Cobley''s accomplished figurative painting. As with other Cobley nudes, we are drawn to the figure as the focus of a carefully crafted and balanced composition.
