Ce mémoire fait suite aux fascicules I et II consacrés à la description systématique des Gastéropodes (1) et des Lamellibranches (2) du Crétacé de la côte occidentale d'Afrique, du Cameroun à l'Angola.

Les conclusions stratigraphiques seront tirées de l'étude des faunes de Gastéropodes et de Lamellibranches (3), d'Ammonites (4) ainsi que d'études sur les Echinides (5) et les Poissons (6) des divers gisements dont nous avons étudié les matériaux récoltés dans les régions côtières du Cameroun, du Gabon, du Moyen-Congo ou Congo français, du Bas-Congo belge et de l'enclave portugaise de Cabinda, d'Angola. En outre, il sera tenu compte d'études ou de recherches plus récentes, intervenues depuis l'établissement des descriptions systématiques que nous venons de citer. <...>

When the major mineral deposits of Africa are studied in relation to the structure of the continent, two tectono-metallogenic units emerge, as follows: (a) younger orogens consisting of zones which have suffered orogenesis from time to time during the past ca. 1200 m.y. - characterised by major deposits of Cu, Pb, Zn, Co. Sn, W, Be and Nb-Ta; and (b) older cratons, with a record of older orogenesis but which have remained stable throughout the younger periods of tectonism - characterised by important deposits of Au, Fe, Cr, asbestos and diamond. The more localised metallogenic provinces of ore con­centration within these major units are briefly discussed.

В вводном разделе дается характеристика основных структурных элементов земной коры: континентов, океанов, подвижных—геосинклинальных и орогенных поясов, континентальных и океанических платформ и др., приводится тектоническая периодизация истории Земли и намечаются наиболее общие черты современного структурного плана земной поверхности. В следующих четырех разделах содержится тектоническое описание Северной Америки, Южной Америки, Антарктиды и Африки. Эти разделы построены по единому плану — вначале сообщаются сведения о рельефе и геологической изученности данного континента и дается его общее тектоническое районирование, затем характеризуются древние платформы — соответственно Северо-Американская, Южно-Американская, Восточно-Антарктическая, Африкано-Аравийская и далее складчатые системы Канадского Арктического архипелага, Северной и Восточной Гренландии, Аппалачей, Кордильер Северной и Южной Америки, Западной Антарктиды. Как при описании платформ, так и в характеристике складчатых систем сначала обрисованы структурные особенности, а затем основные этапы тектонического развития, начиная с древнейших. В заключение отмечаются общие закономерности, черты сходства и отличия в развитии отдельных платформ и складчатых систем. Изложение иллюстрируется многочисленными схемами, профилями, как заимствованными из иностранных источников, так и оригинальными; к числу последних относятся палеотектонические схемы континентов для отдельных этапов и стадий развития и серии профилей, рисующих эволюцию геосинклинальных систем. В приложении даются схематические тектонические карты Северной Америки, Южной Америки, Антарктиды и Африки.

Книга может быть использована геологами, изучающими закономерности распределения различных типов месторождений минерального сырья или занятыми другими теоретическими обобщениями, а также в качестве учебного пособия студентами геологических (геологоразведочных) и географических факультетов высших учебных заведений.

This atlas is intended primarily for anybody who is interested in basic geology of Africa. Its originality lies in the fact that the regional geology of each African nation or territory is reviewed country-wise by maps and text, a view normally not presented in textbooks of regional geology. It is my belief, that there has long been a need in universities and geological surveys, both in Africa and in the developed world, for summarizing geological maps and an accompanying basic text utilising the enormous fund of knowledge that has been accumulated since the beginning of geological research in Africa in the mid–19th century. I hope that, in part, the present atlas may satisfy this need.

Настоящий сборник включает в себя 13 работ, в которых рассматриваются различные вопросы геодинамики, стратиграфии, истории геологического развития, магматизма, метаморфизма, кинематики региона, находящегося на стыке Африки, Саудовской Аравии и восточной Европы с позиций тектоники плит, т.е. как зоны субдукции и связанной с ней орогении.

The Society makes every effort to ensure that the scientific and production quality of its books matches that of its journals. Since 1997, all book proposals have been refereed by specialist reviewers as well as by the Society’s Books Editorial Committee. If the referees identify weaknesses in the proposal, these must be addressed before the proposal is accepted.

Once the book is accepted, the Society Book Editors ensure that the volume editors follow strict guidelines on refereeing and quality control. We insist that individual papers can only be accepted after satisfactory review by two independent referees. The questions on the review forms are similar to those for Journal of the Geological Society. The referees’ forms and comments must be available to the Society’s Book Editors on request.

Although many of the books result from meetings, the editors are expected to commission papers that were not presented at the meeting to ensure that the book provides a balanced coverage of the subject. Being accepted for presentation at the meeting does not guarantee inclusion in the book.
